I am having problems getting SL4NT 2.1 to generate any log files or

recognize any syslog messages being sent to it. I have done the following on

a Compaq DL360 with 2 NICs. Machine is dedicated to this task. Half a gig of

memory, Raid 1 using 18GB drives, 1Ghz Processor running Windows 2000 with

latest updates.

Installed LS4NT with no errors, program starts and appears to run fine.

Created an action to send all messages to a logfile directory that I created

on the D:\ drive.

Started perfomrance monitor to watch the counter Messaeg Received under the

Syslog Service object and counter reads 0 through out the day with no

increase in number of messages.

Sent test messages using the Send Syslog Message command in MMC under the

SL4NT object. Still no increase in counters nor any files benig created in

the directory I specified.

Went to a Cisco device and setup syslog'ing. Then unplugged one of the

redundant power supplies. This will generate a syslog message every minute.

Still no increase in counters.

Removed the SL4NT program entirely from system and installed another syslog

server. The new syslog server immediately started receiving the errors being

generated from my Cisco device.

Removed second SYSLOG program and reinstalled SL4NT 2.1, again no problems

or errors. Created an action to send messages to a log file. Still no file

being created nor anything being shown in performance monitor.

Thx Franz! The rule was the kicker. I didn't create it after I reinstalled

SL4NT, but I know I did it yesterday when it wasn't working because I saw it

something about it in someone else's post. In anycase, it's working now. :)

Great support too... response time to my question was nice and quick.

Now for licensing. A single license is for a single server no matter how

many devices are reporting to it, corrcet? And a Site License would be for

multiple SL4NT servers in one campus area?

did you also create a rule? If yes, make a backup of your configuration

(using SL4NT Manager) to a text file and send it to me. If not, create a

rule (don't specify any conditions, just associate the log-to-file action

with this rule.
