We are evaluating the SL4NT 2.1 for use in our enterprise to capture syslog
messages from our Cisco routers. However I have had no luck nor has my
counterparts at our corporate office in Italy.

I setup SL4NT on a NT server and configured it to log all SYSLOG messages to
the disk. Every syslog capable program I have onsite is able to send syslog
messages to it except for my Cisco routers. Do you know why? I know the
configuration of my Cisco routers is correct because at this site I use
Cisco Resource Essentials to capture Syslog messages from my Cisco
Equipment. However this would be a solution that would deployed in several
different affiliate offices around the world...assuming I could get it to
work.

Could you give me any ideas why this is not working for me? I have even
tried installing it on a different NT server with no luck.

Thanks!

Hi Kent,

the fact that SL4NT logs syslog messages from other syslog clients indicates
that there's a problem with your router configuration.

To troubleshoot:

1. Use a network sniffer (like Network Monitor, included with NT4 & W2K
server) to verify that syslog messages are sent from the router to the
computer running SL4NT (target port: UDP/514).
2. Use the SL4NT perf counters (Syslog Service object, counter: Messages
received) to check if syslog messages are received by SL4NT.
